The career of Royce Da 5’9” does not fit neatly into an archetype story line. For better or worse, it’s one of a kind. Who else can claim to be an artist who lives in the creative company of giants, and at the same time, accessible to the underground movement that birthed his career??? Between Slaughterhouse, PRhyme, & Bad Meets Evil, the Detroit, Michigan MC has three dominant, differently successful groups he co-founded, all pulling from different parts of his skill & personality. That is before Nickel’s extensive solo catalog is even mentioned.
On 4.15.2016, Royce will release his sixth studio album, 'Layers', via Bad Half Entertainment/INgrooves. This will be his first solo album in nearly five years & the very first for his Bad Half imprint, and as the album title suggests, this album will culminate his upward journey.
Royce Da 5’9” explains of 'Layers':
“This album was the first album that I spent a lot of time putting it together as a complete thought. Most of my albums reflect an emotion based off of my feelings. 'Death Is Certain' was dark because of everything I was going through; this album reflects my emotion, but also my thoughts. That focus on 'Layers' comes after a Gold album, multiple Top 5 chart appearances, & a high profile BET Hip Hop Awards cypher performance. I've learned a lot from being apart of B.M.E., Slaughterhouse, & PRhyme and I've had the opportunity to use all of those experiences to better myself as artist, so it's very exciting to see how those experiences will affect my career. 'Layers' is an awakening!"
Nationally recognized since the late 1990s, Royce Da 5’9” found good reason why his personality, skills, & artistry have only grown with time. “I've consistently grown as an artist because I've never compromised who I am as a man”. The same fiery confidence heard on the breakthrough DJ Premier-produced single “Boom” more than 15 years ago is still at play in Royce’s writing & nimble delivery. Beyond sales, Grammy awards, or plaques, Nickel Nine raps like he’s truly the best. Given his litany of career challenges, hurdles, & massive setbacks—the fact that he has only grown in the ranks argues his place at the top.
Executive produced by Mr. Porter & Royce, the D12 co-founder has worked on several classic albums & his role in 'Layers' cannot be overstated. “Denaun is a genius and working with him is one of my comfortable working zones,” says Royce. “I like working with everyone I've worked with a lot on this project but Denaun's super easy and a lot like myself in a lot of ways”.
Operating as he successfully has almost his entire career (his way), 'Layers' will be released on 4.15.2016!!! “I’ve spent a lot of years building my career and reputation, I love creating music and now it’s time to build my legacy".
