Bringing a throwback, old-school garage inspired sound for the summer months, Birmingham hip-hop artist JayKae and East London artist & DJ Murkage Dave – also part of Tonga and one half of the UK alt-R&B duo HALFBROTHER – have released their new track “Every Country” which premiered on MistaJam’s 1Xtra show last Thursday night (8.3.2017).
Produced by Skepta, the track came together after the pair previously collaborated on the Tonga record “CCTV” last year. The must-see visual was directed by Luke Sparrowhawk of Birmingham’s P110 and was shot in Paris, where Murkage Dave had been working on music, bringing to life the refrain of having a ‘peng ting in every country’. First performing the track as a part of Jaykae’s headline show at MADE festival in his hometown, the duo are set to perform “Every Country” again at Reading & Leeds Festival during Jaykae’s set later this month.
On the track, Jaykae said:
“I was in the studio with Skepta last year and he played me an instrumental which I instantly gravitated to. With its garage vibe and Mike Skinnerish influence, I thought it was only right to reach out to Murkage Dave. The feel of Summer 2002 with a Summer of 2017 sound.”
Murkage Dave said:
“I fuck with Jaykae heavily. When you meet him everything you’ve heard in his music makes total sense, he’s a real artist in that way. I was a fan of his song ‘Toothache’ and he was a fan of my song ‘Car Bomb’, so even though we’d collaborated before it felt good to be able to work together on more of an introspective energy. With the video, I was already out in Paris working on music and Jay just flew out on a spontaneous one, it was a wicked couple of days just rolling around the city and making new friends.”
Putting Birmingham’s grime scene firmly on the map, Jaykae first picked up the mic in 2009 which subsequently led to him becoming a part of the city’s prominent squad Invasion Alert. Known for his strong flow, dynamic delivery and authentic style which draws deeply from his own life experiences, his focus on his solo career recently saw him supporting Skepta on the Birmingham date on the Konnichiwa tour. He recently featured on Skepta’s all-star remix of the hit single “That’s Not Me” and alongside collaborations with his Birmingham cohorts Dapz On The Map and Lotto Boyzz he has worked with breakout UK rap star Mist. With recent sets at Glastonbury, Lovebox and #Merky Festival in Ibiza under his belt, Jaykae continues to prove why his electric energy and show-stopping lyrical talent make him a crucial part of the UK’s grime scene and the essential voice to his city.
With a presence in major cities across Europe such as London, Copenhagen and Berlin and at internationally renowned festival including Glastonbury, Bestival and Latitude, Murkage Dave runs the popular party and sound system Tonga with Mike Skinner which has welcomed guests such as Kano, Giggs, Fekky and Kojo Funds. He also formed HALFBROTHER with Patrick Scally after collaborating on the track “Car Bomb”, which became a cult hit last year and culminated in support from Pharrell Williams on his Beats 1 radio show. The duo have been steadily making their mark on the music scene and catching the attention of outlets such as PAPER, The Independent, i-D, DIY and Earmilk with tracks such as “Go Tell The Mandem” & “Love Letter” along the way. They recently brought their first performance as a duo to The Old Blue Last as the main opening act for Star Slinger whilst this year they are set to release their debut album ‘Men Can’t Protect You Anymore’ which will feature their unique take on alternative R&B influenced sounds and exciting collaborations with UK Hip-Hop artist Oscar #worldpeace.
