In 2015, Toronto singer Ekelle was falsely arrested under suspicion of drug trafficking while on her way home from a vacation. There is still a huge stigma associated with any sort of police interaction, especially an arrest. People start to look at you funny, like you’ve done something wrong. They completely forgot that you are innocent until proven guilty.
“Dropped,” her latest single, humanizes this issue. She wants people to remember that they’re still human, no matter the outcome. They have to go through enough to clear their names and fight for their lives. It’s so much harder to go through this with all the judgement.
Bobby “B.” Morales wrote a custom beat for this song, working with her from the production stage all the way to the master and mix of “Dropped.”
She wants you to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Everything comes to an end. In sharing her story and putting herself out there like this, she encourages people to summon the courage to confront their own problems, no matter what they may be.
Ekelle hopes that “Dropped” helps people to seek out support so that they don’t have to go through the worst all by themselves.
