Video: Cocoa Sarai - Big Dummy

Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Cocoa Sarai is releasing the visual for her latest single “Big Dummy” which Cocoa directed herself alongside Kai Martinez through Cocoa’s own production company Earn Yo Sleep. The video stars herself, as well as Hollywood beauty Bianca Bethune (Bad Boys II, Bad Boys for Life, Switched at Birth). The song is produced by Dre Pinckney (Bebe Rexha, Noah Cyrus, Jessie Reyez) and Symphony, who both make an appearance in the video. Cinematography by Milo DeMartile for Volar Visuals and partly filmed at Dr. Dre’s Record One recording studio.

Undeniably, “Big Dummy” is Cocoa’s most transcendent piece to date. There isn’t an artist at any stage of their career, or on any scale of beauty they produce that haven’t been in this position. All creatives experience the lack of support from others, the doubt in faith for themselves, and the frustration of just being plain ole’ broke. It’s the immediate deep breath their soul takes when things start to pay off, and “Big Dummy” captures the concept of it having been worth it all. Set in the 50’s, the story follows a day in the life of a struggling artist and the humiliation of being faced with peers who have become successful in their chosen career paths looking down on her, a car breaking down on the way to a gig, and being paid close to nothing for performing while saving money just for studio time. Plus, a tearjerker surprise of Cocoa’s mother making an appearance at the very end.

When I was writing the treatment, it was important that the visual captured what it really feels like to chase a dream that doesn’t pay right away. I wanted to be just as transparent in the visual as I was when I was writing the song” -Cocoa Sarai
