This mixtape review will mark another point in VannDigital.com history for 2 reasons: one, this will be the first mixtape review for the new VannDigital.com & two, this will be the first time, since my review for Free Agent Jasun’s ‘919s & Headaches‘, I will cover a mixtape that wasn’t put out thru the website at all. Today’s review will cover another artist (click here for last week’s review for P. Fly’s ‘Fear The G.A.W.D.’) from The Elite Money Empire (or EME) named L Jay who dropped his debut mixtape ‘One Man Strong‘ last year (September 2012). ‘One Man Strong‘ is a collection of 12 all-original tracks for you to lay back & enjoy.
There’s a still-existing debate about NY Hip-Hop making a comeback & that might very well happen with artists such as L Jay. And on ‘One Man Strong‘, he has the talent & potential to make that happen. Tracks like “Get Ya Hands Up“, “Going In (Intro)“, & “I’m The Truth” show a good display of how far L Jay can go with his lyricism. So with that said, there’s actually some gems left in the NYC talent pool still.
While L Jay has the talent & potential to help bring NY Hip-Hop back, it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen on ‘OMS‘. With the bombs such as the ones mentioned above come mostly smokers as most of the tracks on ‘OMS‘ focus on the same ol’ topics we hear everyday on mainstream radio. His subject matter should get better over time as ‘OMS‘ is his first project.
Hopefully, L Jay will come harder on his next project whenever that may be. But at the same time, ‘OMS‘ is a good project for audiences that still love to hear about the same hip-pop topics going around mainstream radio. ‘One Man Strong‘ is available now & you can download it here. -Review written by DV
