This week, the guys are joined by comedian Sam Jay and the trio discuss Zion Williamson’s breakout year and the development paths of NBA players.
The trio also delve into the growth of women’s basketball and the current NCAA tournament, with Sam criticizing LSU’s lackluster start to the tournament, HC Kim Mulkey’s flashy jackets, and more.
Later in the episode, Sam shares the story of her flirty encounter with former baseball star David Ortiz while working at a Sprint store, and says she has the baseball to prove it.
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
- 48:28 – THE TRIO DISCUSSES ZION WILLIAMSON’S DEVELOPMENT; MELO SAYS PLAYERS NEED THEIR TIME TO GROW, WE CAN’T EXPECT THEM TO BE STARS AFTER ONE YEAR OF COLLEGE
Sam: “Like a lot of motherfuckers came in on the hype, came in early and it was like dud city. Do you think a lot of that has to do with it too? A lot of [guys] came in[to] the NBA, it’s gonna be crazy…and now we [are] waiting 5 and 6 years to actually see these motherfuckers play the way they [are] supposed to [have] been playing.”
Melo: “We don’t have the patience to see that development.”
Sam: “Because you’re in the NBA, we wanna see it [right now].”
Melo: “If you’re in the NBA right now, you gotta be ready.”
Sam: “It’s like Zion’s just growing up.”
Melo: “It always take three, four years to grow up. Even with me. I came in right away playing well, performing and finding my way and doing what I felt like I needed to do at that point. But it took me about my fourth year to be like I’m here. You know what I’m saying? I’m here now. We going north.”
Sam: “I knew he was in trouble when he went to New Orleans. I was like beignets, big booty b*tches, money…What [are] you doing with this boy? You’re setting him up for something crazy. You got to stick a [guy] like that in Utah like ain’t nothing [to] do play basketball and sleep.”
Melo: “So Zion speaking to him, he was different. We knew he was coming to college getting the fuck out of here. He was different. And he took a couple years to so what makes you think that all everybody else is going to come in and perform? You going to have to go through that journey. Only four players every year in the draft is going to see the court. Rookies.”
Mero: “Three years of development in college is way different than three years of development in the NBA.”
Melo: “Absolutely. But that’s why we seeing the women’s sports ratings [above] men’s ratings because you don’t know who the fuck is on what school.”
- 50:30 – THE TRIO SAYS CAITLIN CLARK IS READY FOR THE WNBA BUT WON’T HAVE THE PATIENCE TO WATCH HER JOURNEY
Mero: “You’re going to see Caitlin Clark next year.”
Melo: “Yeah, she [is] in the draft. And that’s a different story though because now she got to go and prove herself. That’s another level. You got people waiting for you.”
Mero: “You don’t see that in the NBA at all. Like, yo, I played four years of college, bro. You’ve been seeing me in the tournament. You’ve been seeing me cook.”
Sam: “…She did her four. She got the confidence. She’s ready. It’s going to be tough though. I think she going to get way more work than she thinks she going to get…She’s going to be alright.”
Melo: “So I think she’s going to be alright. I think she’s going to be really good. I know people don’t have no patience. You get what I’m saying? So the minute that she don’t come in clicking right away, people don’t want to see the journey. People that know it, they want to see the development and the journey.”
- 51:49 – SAM SAYS THE LSU WOMEN’S TEAM IS TOO SLOPPY, ANGEL REESE’S TOO CONFIDENT, AND THEY ARE TOO DISTRACTED
Mero: “You know what else about the women’s game too? The tournament, the storylines is way more interesting bro. You know what I’m saying? You got the LSU sh*t with [Kim] Mulkey going crazy. You got Dawn Staley holding it down. The stories [are] just way more interesting, bro.”
Sam: “It’s done. Yeah. [South Carolina] just playing, they’re efficient. They’re clicking on and I’m sorry, but to me personally, LSU is playing sloppy ass basketball. They [are] not the same team they used to be.”
Melo: “They are though.”
Sam: “I think [Angel] Reese’s gotten way too confident and she just, her decision making, I hate to say it, it’s terrible. She takes the wildest shots, shots from behind. I’m like, why are you shooting it right now in this moment? And they just don’t seem to have composure when it’s necessary to have composure. And the [South Carolina] Gamecocks are just in all cylinders, sufficient team and I just don’t see it. I just don’t see it. These wins that LSU been having. It is like y’all just made it…And it shouldn’t be. It really shouldn’t be with all that talent. They seem like a team that’s distracted, in my opinion. They got too much going on.”
Melo: “Everybody ready to go.”
Sam: “Everybody ready to go. Everybody’s popping off. [They] just dropping songs the same day as the tournament. They just lit over there. And I’m not judging it. Be lit! But you could see what the effect is on the floor and it’s crazy over there. Kim [Mulkey] gotta take them jackets off. Everybody gotta turn down.”
- 55:46 – MELO AND SAM AGREE THE WOMEN’S GAME IS AT ITS PRIME AND IT’S GOING TO CONTINUE TO GROW
Sam: “But the women’s game, you want to watch girls three, four years, see how they grow, get that attachment to them, be excited for the draft. Where is everybody going? Have the jersey. And you only get that from watching players play four years, watching how they perform [for] four years. So it’s like the women’s game is prime for where it’s at and what it’s doing. It’s like it’s their moment to really do this shit the way they.”
Melo: “Absolutely. And you can’t compare it. That’s where it’s going, that’s what’s happening. You can’t compare it to the men’s game. You just got to let it be its own thing. Let it be its own thing and let it grow as it grow. And we see the support that we have for women’s sports and it’s growing.”
- 1:24:16 – SAM REVEALS THE TIME DAVID ORTIZ TRIED TO GET WITH HER, AND HAS THE BASEBALL TO PROVE IT
Sam: “Can I tell you some real shit? I could have maybe got a bag of David Ortiz at one point he was trying to fuck me.”
Melo: “This is crazy! Hold on, hold on, hold on.”
Sam: “He’ll never remember this and this will sound like an absolute lie but I was sucking dick at the time. I was living a different life. I was working at the Sprint store and I have a baseball to prove it. I was working at the Sprint store …He came in with his daughter, young girl, came in to get a bunch of phones…and his daughter was in the store. So I’m just giving her things to color on. This is a long process. I’m being good… He was like you so good with children. You know what that means! So then he started just sitting in my face. He’s like, ‘oh what are you doing next week? Do you want to go out?’ And he tried to get my number but I was like, nah David Ortiz. I think a part of me knew I was about to turn to the dark side of the forest. So I was like I don’t even need to be playing these games. I’m still figuring some shit out…I played myself but I got a signed baseball out of it.”
