The New York Urban League (NYUL), one of New York City’s oldest civil rights organizations and the flagship affiliate of the National Urban League, will host its 58th Annual Frederick Douglass Awards Dinner at the historic Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City on Thursday, June 6th.
The New York Urban League Gala is not just a signature moment each year, but a testament to the power of community support.
It helps raise funds to support new and expanded programming and community services, furthering the League’s mission to assist underserved communities with better access to jobs, schools, and hospitals.
NYUL accomplishes its mission through direct service delivery, advocacy, referrals, community capacity building, information dissemination, and technical assistance, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.
The 58th Annual Frederick Douglass Awards, hosted by GMA3’s indelible DeMarco Morgan, is co-chaired by three remarkable individuals.
Multigenerational actress, producer, director, author, and philanthropist, Meagan Good, star of Amazon’s award-nominated series “Harlem“, and the lead of Amazon Studio’s upcoming thriller “Divorce In The Black” written, directed, and produced by Tyler Perry.
Award-winning filmmaker, author, and entrepreneur Tonya Lewis Lee, is a dedicated advocate for women’s health, which was most recently reflected through her seminal documentary “Aftershock“, that shed light on the US maternal health crisis.
Rounding out the trio of dynamic, socially conscious honorary co-chairs is Bethann Hardison, trailblazing fashion model and activist.
Meagan Good, Tonya Lewis Lee, and Bethann Hardison, each a beacon of excellence in their respective fields, were selected for their outstanding contributions, alliance, and dedication to the NYUL’s mission.
Their impressive achievements have made a significant impact on the communities they serve.
This year’s Gala theme is “Fight Today. Change Tomorrow: Voting & Civic Engagement”.
NYUL’s strategy is to (1) Continue to promote the right and need to vote; (2) Activate key stakeholders, including young Professionals and Community Members, in efforts to promote the importance of civic engagement; and (3) Engage local elected officials, public offices, and community stakeholders to advance policy and initiatives that ensure all New Yorkers have equal access to participate in civic processes fully.
The New York Urban League Gala will honor George Gresham, President, 1199SEIU; Aurora James, Founder, Fifteen Percent Pledge; Camille Joseph-Goldman, Group Vice President, Government Affairs, Charter Communications; and Renee McClure, Director of DNY Customer Account Management, National Grid.
Each of these remarkable individuals has steadfastly championed equality for all, particularly the underserved and working class, inspiring all with their unwavering commitment.
