After taking a year long break, Toronto band Abstract Random return with a new name, new album, & a new member.
Introducing ATS [Above Top Secret] an evolution of Abstract Random, also known as Ayo Leilani, Tee Fergus, & Sunsun. An all female, experimental, rap/electro/dub hop mashup.
Three people, six years, countless shows from galleries & parks, to clubs & festivals like; NXNE, CMW, AfroPunk, Riot Grrrl Berlin, Wavelength, Soul Of Brooklyn, AMC, Pride, & more. They have opened for Shabazz Palaces (Sub Pop Records), THEESatisfaction (Sub Pop Records), Climbing Poetree (NYC), LAL (T.O), & Elephant 12 (UK). As well as, independently toured Europe twice in 2012 & 2013, playing shows in Berlin, Oldenburg, Amsterdam, London, & Paris.
Their 2012 Ontario Arts Council funded album ‘Siren Songs‘ was nominated in the Best Electronic category at the Toronto Independent Music Awards & their previous seven independently produced music videos, (*distributed by CFMDC), have been featured in film festivals around the world.
As members of the Toronto based collective 88 Days Of Fortune, ATS describes their third album as aggressive yet therapeutic. A release, a way to process, as well as a method of self care. Their Afro-Futuristic inspired production is a mashup of dub, trap, hip hop, & world beats overlaid with vocal loops & samples.
“Our experiences are real, and relate-able. We use our music to document the world around us and to inspire other female identified people, queer people, and those living in the margins to tell their stories and have the confidence to express themselves.”
Their newest single “Ghost” produced by Sunsun, mixed by Red Bull Jamaica’s @MixedByLytes (aka Tandra Jhagroo), is a reflection of their lived experiences. The song talks about loss of friendships, miscommunication, frustration, & self medication. With a video to be released within a few weeks, and their album dropping in the summer, it looks like the members of ATS are here to stay!!!
