EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
[15:03] MICHAEL PENIX JR. SHARES HIS FEELINGS ON THE “BIG PENIX ENERGY” NICKNAME AND DESMOND HOWARD’S VIRAL CHANT DURING “ESPN COLLEGE GAMEDAY”
RG3: “I don’t know if you heard Desmond [Howard] and what he said on ‘College GameDay’ but I just want to know what you think.”
MPJ: “Nah man, He said my name wrong but it’s all good.”
RG3: “I don’t know what was worse, the fact that he said your name wrong which is bad or his rhythm….I’m sure he [Desmond Howard] got a little tap on the shoulder for that ordeal. But how do you feel about the ‘Big Penix Energy?’”
MPJ: “I mean it’s cool to me, as long as it’s not out of disrespect. I understand I got a unique name but as long as it’s respect behind it and nobody disrespecting my name and what I stand for it’s cool.”
[20:09] MPJ ON INITIALLY COMMITTING TO TENNESSEE BEFORE LANDING AT INDIANA
“I was committed to Tennessee for almost two years and it was like a couple weeks before signing day, a new coaching staff came in and they had a guy they wanted already before so they basically took away my offer. The way I landed at Indiana was that coach Nick Sheridan and Mike DeBord were at Tennessee when I originally committed and they wound up at Indiana.”
[33:02] MPJ ON PEOPLE CRITICIZING PLAYERS FOR ENTERING THE TRANSFER PORTAL
“From my experience, it’s changed my life in plenty of ways, and when it comes to the transfer portal, I don’t feel like people in the outside world should be able to judge or feel like somebody is doing something wrong because they wanted to leave their situation. People don’t really understand what they’re going through and the reasons why they did it. So I feel like it’s definitely a good thing and it’s helped a lot of people across the country. We’re talking about all the PAC 12 quarterbacks this year, everyone you know except for the freshman, is a transfer, so it’s definitely helped a lot of people find their home and be able to increase their abilities on the field.”
[35:15] MPJ ON THE DISMANTLING OF THE PAC 12 CONFERENCE AND THE EXCITEMENT OF TAKING ON A NEW CHALLENGE IN A NEW CONFERENCE
“I really don’t know to be honest…It’s an opportunity to allow us to be able to play these other teams, teams that you see winning a lot of football games in the BIG 10 and that competition level is amazing. I feel like it’s gonna be something great and I know the ‘Dawgs’ are gonna be ready. I won’t be there but I know the guys are super excited. I know the one thing they are talking about though is the travelling. Those are gonna be some long flights.”
[39:38] MPJ LOOKING BACK ON THE HUSKIES IMPRESSIVE COMEBACK VICTORY AGAINST OREGON
“It was amazing. There was so much that went into that week and understanding we were gonna have a tough game ahead of us and we couldn’t let up at all. To be honest it felt like in the 3rd quarter it felt like we had a stretch where we couldn’t move the ball at all and we were making a lot of self-inflicted mistakes and it caused us to be closer in that game than what we would want to but they’re a good football team and they’re gonna make plays so it was a long game, tough game.”
[41:15] MICHAEL PENIX JR. ON HIS SIDELINE FREESTYLING BEFORE WASHINGTON’S COMEBACK DRIVE
“I feel like it was just in the moment with my guys, no fear, no worry about what was gonna happen…That’s an everyday thing for us so it’s nothing for us to be tense because we’ve done it before. I guess I was just loose and ready to go back out.”
