Jonezen recently made his debut on The DigiSpot with his single “Heaven For A Sinner” which you can give a listen here. Jonezen also takes the time out to speak on his upcoming projects, his past battle with alcoholism, & more with us and you can give everything that was discussed below…
VannDigital: What inspired you to rap???
Jonezen: In short, House of Pain’s “Jump Around”. I was writing lyrics as a kid, rock lyrics, in about 4th grade. And then I started playing guitar in 7th grade. Once the homies played me some hip hop, I was hooked. “Jump Around” was the first record that I fell in love with. After that, I started rapping.
Any deals on the table at the moment??? If not, if you were to be offered a deal, would you accept???
No deals at the moment. I’ve had two in the past and one of them was pretty solid. Not sure if I’d sign again though. It just depends on who the offer was from and what the terms were. I think when push came to shove, it was a good offer, and I had the ability to control the kind of music I was making, then yea I’d probably sign.
If you don’t mind us asking, what drove you into alcoholism???
Man, there’s not really anything that “drove” me to alcoholism. No one situation or event that I can point to as the reason for that path I went on. To sum it up without going on for too long, I always felt like something was missing. Like I didn’t fit in. I filled that whole with booze and drugs. It made me feel a part of. All that anxiety and insecurity melted away. Then as time goes on, it turns into something else, something you can’t go without. After that your body becomes physically addicted and then it’s a wrap, you’re done. In my experience after that, there’s no way back to ‘normal’ after that happens. It’s actually been a blessing though and I’m grateful for those struggles and path I chose. I certainly have regrets, but on the flip side it’s all been worth it.
Any upcoming projects on the way???
Most def. I’m working on lots of new music. I have about 10 tracks almost done or in the works and other beats getting made. Not sure what the release plan is. That’s something I’ll work out with my manager and team. I just did 3 tracks at the beginning of 2017. So right now, I’m going to finish what I have cooking, then plan the releases. Most likely, an EP will drop either in fall of this year or early in 2018.
Is there anything else that you would like to accomplish that you haven’t accomplished yet???
Damn so much. I’ve been lucky and successful in my own right. I’ve been fortunate enough to get some press, win some awards, be on the radio, hit a few charts, MTV, tour, and all that. And that’s great, but I still haven’t headlined my own major tour, earned any plaques for sales, etc. I still don’t feel like I’ve made an impact on enough people, like enough people have heard the message in the music. I think there’s something in there, in the story, that can help people going through tough times. That’s a big goal of mine – to give back and inspire. I’m also still not in a place where I can retire on this music thing and that’s where I want to be. Aside from all that, I’m super grateful for where I’m at, the success I’ve seen, the people on my team who help me day in and day out, the fans that I have who support me, and when it’s all said and done, if somebody told me it was over today, I’d look back and smile. No regrets.
