“My drive is just crazy right now,” says L.A. rapper Jay Rock, who’s been earning rave reviews for his latest release, ‘Redemption.’ Dropping in the midst of Kanye season and The Carters’ surprise release, Rock’s album is arguably the strongest of his career. ‘Redemption’ follows on the heels of “King’s Dead,” Rock’s hit collab with Kendrick Lamar on the ‘Panther’ soundtrack. “Dot was like, ‘Yeah I’m workin’ on this Black Panther’ project,” Jay Rock remembers of the session. “I was like OK—I’m thinking he was talkin’ ’bout some revolutionary type shit.” This recent hot streak has raised the profile of the Watts native who was actually the first artist signed to Top Dawg Entertainment. A few years ago Rock overcame a near fatal motorcycle crash but now he’s bounced back and sticking with the TDE motto. “Hustle like you broke,” says Rock. “I’m ready to get back in the lab right now.” Check out the latest episode of Open Space right now.
