The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said it is investigating a video that appears to show a school resource officer slamming a high school student to the ground.
Osceola County Sheriff Marco Lopez said he has asked to Florida Department of Law Enforcement to conduct an independent criminal investigation in the interest of transparency.
Officials said they were sent video of an incident on Tuesday at Liberty High School.
In the video, you can see the white deputy, who’s been identified as Ethan Fournier, slamming the Black female student into the ground, before putting her hands behind her back.
According to sheriff’s officials, Fournier was trying to break up an incident between the girl and another student before he took further action.
“It was a disruption of a school function, the student was not complying with lawful commands, she went after another student and from there excelled and that’s where the continued investigation is going from there,” Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez said.
They say Fournier has been with the agency for about 10 years and has no history of any misconduct. He is now on paid administrative leave.
Sheriff’s officials said the girl’s parents are aware of the situation. They said she was medically attended to at the scene and is doing OK.
They also say there is more to the video.
Other students and another resource officer may be involved.
