Rep. Walter Jones (R-3rd District) today introduced a bill to name a Wilmington post office after basketball star and Port City native Meadowlark Lemon.
Jones’s bill would designate the US Post Office at 314 Lennon Drive in Wilmington as the “Meadowlark Lemon Post Office.”
“Eastern North Carolina is proud to have been the childhood home of one of the most famous basketball players of our generation,” Rep. Jones said in a statement. “Not only did Meadowlark Lemon achieve great success as a member of the Harlem Globetrotters, he is well-known for his motivational speaking and work to benefit young people. It is only appropriate to honor him with a post office in his hometown of Wilmington.”
Known as the “Crown Prince of Basketball,” Lemon was a member of the Harlem Globetrotters for more than 26 seasons. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.
