Editorial: Russell Simmons & Paramount Pictures To Produce Movie Based On WorldStarHipHop

Earlier this year, Adult Swim announced that the network had partnered with the popular video-driven website WorldStarHipHop.com to develop a new live-action comedy series inspired by “the energy and style” of the website.

The pilot will be executive produced by site founder Q WorldStar and Devon Shepard (“House Of Lies”, “MadTV”).

Announced this afternoon, Paramount Studios has fast-tracked a feature film inspired by WorldStarHipHop.com, which Russell Simmons has come onboard to co-produce, along with Q Worldstar, Douglas Banker, and Trevor Engelson.

A Fall shoot in New York City is eyed, with Ian Edelman, creator of HBO’s “How to Make It in America”, writing the screenplay and is set to direct.

Plot details are being kept a mystery for now, although comparisons are being made to “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”.

The film will be produced under Paramount’s micro-budget (by Hollywood standards) branch, Insurge Pictures – a program the studio set up to finance 10 feature films, all made with $100,000 budgets each.

Since its launch in 2005, WorldStarHipHop.com has grown from a niche site covering hip-hop culture, news and user-generated video content, into an online juggernaut that receives over 20 million page views a day and 30 million unique visitors a month.
