Editorial: Azealia Banks Gets Dropped From Universal Music Group

After fighting to get a release date for her long delayed debut ‘Broke With Expensive Taste‘, Azealia Banks has parted ways with Universal Music Group.

The Harlem rapper signed to the label in 2012, following the viral success of “212“, but after battling her label for a release date, & several Twitter beefs along the way, her album was never released.

This week, Banks was finally released from Universal Music Group.

“IM ABOUT TO GET OUT OF MY DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THATS THE BIG SURPRISE!!!!!” she tweeted Thursday (July 10). “I’m feeling like miss celie at the end of color purple. Free at last.”

In January, she pleaded for a release from her label via social media, writing: “I’m literally begging to be dropped from Universal. Universal needs to just hand me over to another label who knows what to do with me.”

“I’m tired of having to consult a group of old white guys about my black girl craft. they don’t even know what they’re listening for or to,” she said. “Can someone at Sony buy me off of Universal please?? i’m really in hell here.”
