Editorial: A$AP Rocky & Tyga To Star In Upcoming Forest Whitaker-Produced Movie 'Dope'

Zoë Kravitz, Keith Stanfield, Kimberly Elise, and rap stars A$AP Rocky & Tyga have all been cast in the new feature film by Rick Famuyiwa (“The Wood,” “Brown Sugar,” “Our Family Wedding”), titled “Dope,” which is described as a coming of age story about geeks growing up in Inglewood, California, trying to avoid gangs, drugs, and crime.

Starring Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori (“Grand Budapest Hotel”), and Kiersey Clemons, the follows a trio of best friends who are also in their own hip hop – punk band.

Significant Productions’ Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi (“Fruitvale Station”) are producing the film, which will feature original music by Pharrell Williams, who’s also executive producing. Famuyiwa, who made his mark with the 1999 dramedy, “The Wood” (although it wasn’t his first film), also helmed 2002’s “Brown Sugar,” and co-wrote the screenplay for Kasi Lemmons’ “Talk To Me” in 2007.

Significant Productions based in Los Angeles, most recently produced “Fruitvale Station,” which was the winner of both The Audience and Grand Jury Award at Sundance Film Festival 2013, as well as L’Avenir Prize at Cannes Film Festival.

Principal photography on “Dope” is currently underway.
