A drunken father’s humiliating arm-wrestling loss to his young son in Kentucky sparked a shooting — and then an eight-hour standoff with deputies, sheriff’s officials said.

Curtis Zimmerman, 55, was drunk when he challenged his juvenile son to an arm-wrestling contest early Monday at a home in Florence, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.

Zimmerman “became agitated” after losing to his son several times, prompting a spat between the pair that turned physical, deputies said.

Zimmerman proceeded to grab a gun as his son was going upstairs and fired two shots inside the home, deputies said.

Zimmerman, who told deputies he fired his gun into the ceiling, refused to comply with deputies’ commands when they responded to the home, resulting in an eight-hour standoff.

“The Boone County Sheriff’s Office Hostage Negotiation Team spoke with Zimmerman throughout the morning and ultimately negotiated his safe surrender,” sheriff’s officials said, adding that two of Zimmerman’s relatives earlier got out of the home unharmed.

Authorities did not provide the age and identity of Zimmerman’s son.

Zimmerman, who was taken to a hospital to be evaluated, will face charges of first-degree wanton endangerment once he’s released and will be taken to the Boone County Detention Center, deputies said.

Zimmerman was not listed in custody as of early Tuesday, online records show.
