Chuck D Reveals Favorite Public Enemy Record

Flavor Flav: For all of our listeners, what are your favorite records of Public Enemy that we’ve recorded?

Chuck D: That we recorded?

Flavor Flav: Yeah.

Chuck D: I like them all ’cause they just like, you know, like kids. You don’t rate your kids, so I mean, it’s like, to me personally, I like, “Welcome to the Terrordome”. You know, Keith came in and put the spanking on that. I like “Harder Than You Think” ’cause it’s easy to do and it was done so quick and that’s Gary G-Whiz. Of course, “Rebel Without a Pause”. “Shut Em Down” is always a favorite. “Public Enemy No. 1” is because it was our first, you know, and I wanted to make a record that made people look at it ugly and made them run away. I didn’t want to, you know, I’m always that difficult dude, so I don’t want you to say you like my shit. Matter of fact, I want you to say you hate my so I could beat your ass with it. How about that? That’s what I like.

Chuck D & Flavor Flav Talk What’s Next for Public Enemy

Chuck D: You know, next year, 2025, you know, you’ll see a new style of Public Enemy every once in a while, in very big places, go at a show. This year, you’ll see a little this and that, but we haven’t been before. We ain’t been on tour like eight years, but people seen us tear up on TV and we make appearances like tonight. We are making appearances. We are not going out and destroying the road like we did because we are a different age and stage and we pick a time, you better be there ’cause it’s gonna be big and we’re gonna turn them out, but you know, the appearances thing is nice. A lot of times people get distorted. I saw you on TV and I keep seeing it over and over again. I said, “Yeah ’cause we did it once and you keep looking at replays on YouTube or whatever.”

Why Chuck D is Upset with Flavor Flav’s Mother

Chuck D: And you know what pissed me off?

Flavor Flav: What’s that?

Chuck D: I said I was gonna digitize all them shows and you had them all stacked in your mom’s basement in the giant, he ain’t lying. Look-

Flavor Flav: On cassette tapes.

Chuck D: On cassette tapes in a gigantic garbage can and then, you know, and then I said, “Yo, can I get ’em? Can I get ’em?” When I get to New York, “I’m give it to you,” and then your mom threw ’em out.

Flavor Flav: Tell the truth. Nah, you know what? This is what happened to the tapes, man. Honestly, ’cause they was-

Chuck D: Can somebody bring me my bag? Throw me my bag? Or maybe you can give it to me after a break.

Flavor Flav: It was in that big garbage can in the basement. You know what I’m saying?

Chuck D: Yeah. What happened with it?

Flavor Flav: But somebody broke into my mom’s crib. Somebody broke into my mom’s crib when nobody was home.

Chuck D: But they ain’t take them damn tapes.

Flavor Flav: They took a lot of ’em.

Chuck D: They didn’t take them tapes.

Flavor Flav: They took a lot of ’em, but a lot of them I did lose though.

Chuck D: I don’t see people breaking in the crib and stealing tapes.

Flavor Flav: Oh no. The tapes was part of a lot of the stuff that they stole.

Chuck D: Really?

Flavor Flav: Yeah. Yeah.

Chuck D: They couldn’t find no money.

Flavor Flav: There wasn’t no money in there at the time.

Chuck D: Wasn’t in my crib either.
