California Nun Sister Mary Margaret Kreuper Awarded Another Donkey Of The Day For Stealing $835,000 For Gambling

An 80-year-old nun has been sentenced to one year in federal prison for embezzling more than $800,000 in school funds to support a gambling habit.

Mary Margaret Kreuper pleaded guilty last July to federal wire fraud and money laundering. She got her sentence on Monday, admitting to embezzling donations, tuition and fees from 2008 to 2018 to pay for expenses that included “large gambling expenses incurred at casinos,” the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Kreuper served as the principal of Saint James Catholic School in Torrance for nearly 30 years before she retired.

U.S. District Court Judge Otis D. Wright II also ordered Kreuper to pay back the school approximately $835,000 as restitution.

“I have sinned, I’ve broken the law and I have no excuses,” Kreuper said via teleconference. “My actions were in violation of my vows, my commandments, the law and, above all, the sacred trust that so many had placed in me. I was wrong and I’m profoundly sorry for the pain and suffering I’ve caused so many people.”
