Alabama’s Ozark Police Department Awarded Donkey Of The Day

Alabama’s Ozark Police Department has been awarded Donkey Of The Day.

This past December, 39-year-old Reginald Burks–of Ozark, Alabama–was written a speeding ticket for $211.12 which he later went to court and paid.

Over and done with, right??? Wrong!!!

Burks, who is African American, was ordered by Ozark Municipal Judge Nicholas Bull, who is white, to apologize to the cop that wrote the ticket, who is also white, for telling him to “Get your ass out of the way” after receiving said ticket or do up to 30 days in jail.

Not backing down, Burks had this to say…

“It’s not a curse word. It’s in the Bible.”

As of right now, Burks has not been charged with disorderly conduct for using the word “ass” towards the cop.

Burks added…

“He was standing there and wouldn’t move. I had asked him politely at least twice. I said, ‘Sir, step back, get out the way.’ He said, ‘You can go. Go around.’”

Burks said he replied with “Get your ass out of the way so I can take my kids to school. That’s why y’all underpaid because y’all act dumb.”

Burks concluded with…

“I told my mom that I was just going to go up there and see if they were going to give me some time. Whether it is 10 days or 30 days, whatever they want to give me for not writing an apology letter. I am not writing an apology, because I don’t think it is necessary.”

Burks’ attorney, David Harrison, had this to say…

“My client is being punished for a protected speech that has got nothing to do with the traffic situation, which to me is just good ol’ boy Alabama. And what I mean by that is that this system is not equal for African Americans and white people.”

Harrison continues with…

“This man is being convicted for something they couldn’t charge him with and win at trial. The crime here is not apologizing and that’s my issue. It’s not constitutionally sound. It’s probably the most unsound decision that I’ve seen in 33 years of practicing law.”
