I didn’t get to hear this when Flex Hogan ran this show on Hot 97 (which took place back in 1.12.2001) but before Roc-A-Fella Records & State Property became a serious movement, Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Memphis Bleek, Young Chris (Neef Buck was locked up at the time, if I recall correctly), H. Money Bags, Omillio Sparks, & Oschino Vasquez was part of Jay-Z & Roc-A-Fella Records’ Hot 97 takeover. Little did I know, this particular event would be history in the making.
While everybody else put their hearts out there like their lives depended on it, it would be Beanie Sigel & Freeway that would steal the show by going the hardest in this cipher as they would trade verses back-and-forth with next to no effort. It’s also worth noting that Jay-Z took a backseat to let his artists have their moment to shine but not without playing hype man and adding ad-libs here & there.
This event also takes it back to the time when rappers actually put work in & didn’t put in half-ass efforts like what we see with today’s commercial rap game. It’s about time that today’s rappers pay their dues like the pioneers did in their day.
As I’ve just learned that this cipher was part of a lesser-known mixtape, titled ‘Roc-A-Fella Hot 97 Freestyle Takeover‘, you can stream & download this cipher as well as others below…
