Cleveland police fatally shot an unarmed black teen early Thursday while responding to a call of a break-in at a small convenience store, according to ABC 5 Cleveland.
Police say Brandon Jones, 18, was shot at about 2:15 a.m. after officers observed him leaving the store with a bag, the news outlet writes. At least one of two officers had a gun drawn and only one fired the fatal shot, the report notes.
ABC 5 Cleveland reports:
The two officers approached Jones and tried to arrest the man. Police say a struggle between the three ensued…
Jones was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in critical condition and later died.
According to sources, Jones did not have a weapon, but tried to grab an officer’s gun.
The shooting comes amid ongoing protests across the nation regarding police brutality against unarmed Blacks, including 12-year-old Tamir Rice of Cleveland, who was shot and killed while playing with a toy gun at a playground last year.
The U.S. Justice Department released a report late last year on the policing practices of the Cleveland police department. The report found that officers violated civil rights because of inadequate training and a lack of supervision and accountability. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson says the department is in the midst of reforms.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
