Cleveland police have released additional surveillance video in the shooting death of Tamir Rice, 12.

The extended video shows the scene after Rice was shot. It shows Tamir’s sister running up to him, moments after a Cleveland police officer shot and killed the boy.

She ended up on the ground and being restrained.

The city said it agreed to release the 30-minute video after consulting with the city’s legal department. The city previously released a clip of video that showed only the actual shooting and Tamir’s actions leading up to the shooting.

Rice was shot the weekend before Thanksgiving in the playground area of Cuddell Recreation Center. Police were responding to a call regarding a male with a gun.

Police ordered Tamir to put his hands in the air, but they said he reached for his waistband. It was revealed that he had an air soft pistol.

In light of the new surveillance video, Fox 8 spoke to the attorney of the Rice family. Attorney Walter Madison called the treatment of Tamir and his sister “shocking and outrageous.”

Madison said forcing Tamir’s sister to watch her brother die from the back of a police cruiser in one of the cruelest things he’s seen in his life.

The city of Cleveland released the following statement with the new video:

“After consultation with the legal department and Cleveland police, the city of Cleveland is making available an extended view of the Cudell Recreation Center video.”

Steve Loomis, president of the police union, said Thursday he believes the officers’ actions were justified to use deadly force. He said the incident is a tragedy for the family as well as the officers involved.

Regarding the restraint of Tamir’s sister, Loomis said it was a crime scene, and while she was upset, officers had to control the situation.

Tim Loehmann, the officer who fired the shots, remains on restricted duty while the matter is under investigation.

Walter Madison, attorney for Rice’s family, released the following statement:

“The extended version of the Tamir Rice shooting video released this morning by the Cleveland Police Department fully supports the initial account provided by the Rice family.

“This video shows in crystal-clear HD that the responding officers acted inappropriately and recklessly, both in how they handled the shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice and the events that immediately followed.

“The family is outraged that rather than comfort a sister coming to the aid of her dying brother, the officers instead manhandled and tackled her, cuffed her and thoughtlessly tossed her in the back of a patrol car.

“It is painfully obvious that these Cleveland Police Department officers lacked even the most basic elements of training.”
