The Harlem Brewing Company Gets Premium Placement In Walmart

With 11,620 Walmart stores around the country that are getting 100,000,000 customers per week, getting a product placed in a Walmart store is a very big deal. But that is exactly what entrepreneur Celeste Beatty, owner of Harlem Brewing Company, did!

Business is ‘hopping‘:

According to Business Insider & other sources, microbrewery beers, also referred to as craft beers, have taken over America. Microbreweries make up only about 10 percent of America’s beer, but Americans love them. So, when entrepreneur Celeste Beatty had an opportunity to get a premium placement front & center for her beer in 39 Walmart stores across the state of New York, she was thrilled.

Beatty, a graduate of Shaw University who grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, started brewing her own beer more than 15 years ago, using hops she grew in her own back yard. To her, it was “like cooking & gardening,” two things she loves to do. She expects her sales to increase 20 percent as a result of the Walmart deal.

How she got started:

Like many other entrepreneurs, she got started at home. She made her first brews in her studio apartment after finally opening & making use of a home brew kit that someone once gave her as a gift. From then on, she kept on brewing – never giving up on perfecting her home grown recipes.

After facing several challenges when she first attempted to open her own brewery, she decided to partner with a local brewery where she bottled her flagship Harlem Brew-Sugar Hill Golden Ale. Finally, in 2001, she was able to stand on her own two feet, and with the support of her family, friends and neighbors, Harlem Brewing Company officially launched at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

But now, she has her own location on 125th Street near the historic Apollo Theater.

So what’s next?

In addition to Walmart, Beatty’s beer products are on shelves others retailers in New York, Atlanta, Detroit, and some cities in the Carolinas. But she is not stopping there! She teaches brewing classes at the City College of New York, and she is working on establishing a production brewery in West Harlem, New York.
