Editorial: Former Road Manager Sues Jermaine Dupri For Overtime Pay

So So Def founder Jermaine Dupri is being sued by a former road manager and personal assistant for unpaid wage related to overtime worked by the manager.

According to AccessAtlanta.com, Tadd Mingo, a recording engineer, filed the lawsuit in federal court in Atlanta. In the suit, Mingo accuses Dupri of breach of contract and “unjust enrichment.” Despite numerous requests made for the back pay, Mingo only received “empty reassurances” from Dupri, according to the lawsuit.

In addition to Dupri, Mingo has worked with music heavyweights such as Usher, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Lionel Richie and LL Cool J since 2001, according to music industry researcher AllMusic.

Mingo goes on to claim in the lawsuit that he worked an average of 65 hours a week from May 2010 until he was forced to retire this year, but was never compensated for working overtime. Dupri is accused of violating the federal Fair Labor Standards Act in the complaint, which doesn’t specify how much overtime Mingo believes he’s owed.

In addition to the back pay, Mingo seeks damages and attorneys fees.

The former employee’s lawsuit comes after Dupri and So So Def were sued by SunTrust Bank last year for nonpayment of $1.9 million on a loan. The music exec responded to the suit by filing his own lawsuit against SunTrust amid claims the loan was improperly altered. As a result, Dupri was left with “unachievable payment terms” and fighting state and federal tax liens.
