Fidel Castro, former leader of Cuba’s communist revolution, has died at the age of 90 … according to TMZ. Fidel had turned over the reigns to his younger brother Raul Castro, who became President in 2008.

Castro made very few public appearances after that time. Hen was reportedly battling Diverticulitis — a swelling of the colon — at the time of his death.

Castro had ruled the Caribbean island since the revolution in 1959. He was at the helm when Cuba and the U.S. went to the brink of nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962.

Fidel lived to see the American embargo ease up — President Obama made an official state visit to the island in Spring 2016, but reportedly never met face-to-face with Fidel. He did meet Raul.

Scores of celebs have visited Cuba in recent years, as travel restrictions were lifted, including Madonna, Rihanna, the Rolling Stones, Paris Hilton, Jay Z and Beyoncé. Castro is survived by at least 9 children and an unconfirmed number of grandkids.
