The Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl Honors The Heritage, Legacy, & Tradition Of HBCU Football

Historically Black College & University (HBCU) Football has come a long way since its first game in 1892. While The Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl is a new tradition, it’s journey began on December 27, 1892, when the first Black Intercollegiate football game was played between Biddle College (now Johnson C. Smith University) & Livingstone College. Watch “Birth Of HBCU Football To Celebration Bowl” and see how the inaugural game paved the way for The Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl.

Nearly 125 years later, The Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl (AFR Celebration Bowl) has established itself as the first Division I collegiate bowl game of the season. The HBCU post-season football game showcases the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) & Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champions on a national stage. The AFR Celebration Bowl, owned & operated by ESPN Events, will be televised on ABC on Saturday, December 17, 12pm EST from the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. “We know that people will connect with The Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl and acknowledge the legacy, heritage, and tradition of HBCU Football,” said John Grant, Executive Director of The Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl. “The Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl through its trophy represents the dreams, commitment, and sacrifice, of those who simply wanted to play the game.”
