2 Brothers Charged In Murder Of Dwyane Wade’s Cousin, Nykea Aldridge

The two brothers charged in the shooting death of Nykea Aldridge were convicted felons out on parole — prime examples of the judicial system’s inability to stop habitual offenders, Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said at a Sunday news conference.

“When will enough be enough?” Johnson said. “How often do we have to stand at a podium like this, demanding from our judicial and policy partners some type of resolution?”

Derren Sorrells, 22, and Darwin Sorrells Jr., 26, were charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the homicide of Aldridge, a cousin of Chicago Bull Dwyane Wade.

Aldridge, 32, was pushing a baby stroller in the 6300 block of South Calumet at 3:30 p.m. Friday when she was shot in the head and arm. The mother of four was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. Aldridge’s baby wasn’t hurt in the shooting.

Authorities said the brothers were targeting a man who drove two females from a suburb to Chicago’s Parkway Gardens neighborhood. Police think the driver made eye contact with one of the brothers and then both Sorrellses opened fire on him, unintentionally striking Aldridge.

Surveillance cameras at a nearby school captured the Sorrellses in the area but did not record the shooting. No weapons were recovered, police said.

“This tragedy isn’t just noteworthy because Ms. Aldridge has a famous family member,” Johnson said. Rather, it shows that the cycle of arrests, convictions and parole isn’t changing the behavior of those who repeatedly commit crimes.
